Obituary for Johnnie Jane Metcalf (Allen)

Johnnie Jane Metcalf (Allen)
Johnnie Jane Allen Metcalf, 95, died peacefully, in her sleep on Friday, April 21, 2017.
Born to William and Ida (Parker) Allen on October 18, 1921 on Hamburg in Madison County, she was the youngest of eight. She was predeceased by her brothers, R. Arnold, Wilkie, Weldon, and Seburn Allen and sisters, Donnie Marrow, Gladys Butler, and Rosie Burleson. She was also predeceased by her husband of more than fifty years, Ralph V. Metcalf, who passed away in 1989. She was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Belva Worley Metcalf. and her son-in-law, Col. Roland B. Elam, Jr.
Johnnie spent most of her life on Metcalf Creek in Madison County. One of the best cooks around, she was known for her homemade biscuits and gravy, her chocolate dumplings, and her fried apple pies. She preferred her wood stove to any electrical stove ever produced and chose to hang her clothes on the line instead of using a dryer. She spent many hours tending her vegetable and flower gardens and was often heard to say that she’d rather be hoeing in her garden than to be in any fancy place. Johnnie loved beautiful fabrics and loved to piece quilts throughout the long, gray days of winter.
Steadfast in her faith, she served the Lord every day of her life. Her gray Bible, worn and tattered from decades of use, was her constant companion even though she knew a great deal of scripture by heart. She loved to sing hymns. Her favorite was Peace, Peace, Wonderful Peace.
While she will be missed, the family takes great comfort that she was of sound mind and was able to live independently until she was called to her heavenly home.
She is survived by her children: Ralph (Annie) Metcalf of Barnardsville, Dr. Mary “Joyce” Elam of Weaverville, Jerry (Myra) Metcalf of Nebo, her four grandchildren: Dorinda (Curtis), Chris, Lateia (Glenn) and Jason (Kristina) and four great grandsons: Garrett, Hayden, Bradley, and Jack. She is also survived by her sister-in-law and life-long best friend, Ivery Metcalf King, and her special sister-in-law, Lucille Worley Metcalf.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM, Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Reverend Elmer Edwards will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lower Metcalf Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM, Monday at the funeral home.
