Harold will always be Mr. Phillips to me and also to my sister and brother. Half a century ago he taught us Russian and German at Dreher High in Columbia, SC. He was a gentle lion in the classroom, commanding, cueing, and correcting our pronunciation with great skill and massive enthusiasm. He was an awesome teacher, but an even better person. I feel that all his students were made more human and more gracious by his influence. I know I was. The world is less for his loss. May he rest in peace, and may your sorrow be comforted. God bless Harold Phillips.
