The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Harold Phillips can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

I remember Mr. Phillips well from my days at Dreher High School in Columbia. I was privileged to take Russian from him. He was such an excellent teacher that he had us reading, writing, and even singing in that difficult language within the year. That was no mean feat! I also knew his late son Hal well, as we attended elementary school together at Brennan in Columbia. It was quite a shock when he was killed and I have never forgotten his gentle smile. So many years have passed since I last saw Mr. Phillips, and the Dreher he knew and served so well, and which I attended, is no more, at least physically. There is a new and modern replacement there now. However, all of us whose lives were shaped by Dreher and Mr. Phillips will always remember the good old days. It was heartwarming to read Mr. Phillips' obituary and see all that he had done since my time at Dreher. Living in east Tennessee now, I pass through Marshall from time to time. I wish I had known that he was there. Alas, our time to renew acquaintances will have to wait.
