Condolence: Dear Kathleen, Mike and I feel so very fortunate to have known you and Harold, both of you unique, extraordinary people. Harold's sense of humor will always bring us a little smile- thinking of your visit to our cabin for the String Quartet concert and how he charmed the young Russian violinist. His zest for life is inspirational. He will be missed by all who knew him , for many reasons. Please accept our deepest sympathy and warmest regards, Kathleen, and we will look forward to seeing you when we are back in the mountains. Barbara Etsell

Condolence: Herr Phillips was and will always be one of my favorite teachers. His unbridled enthusiasm for teaching language (German for me) and his expansive outside interests made his classroom a rich and wonderful place to be. I knew I could come to him with questions on many subjects and get a well-explored answer. It was my great privilege to sit in his classroom.

Condolence: I remember Mr. Phillips well from my days at Dreher High School in Columbia. I was privileged to take Russian from him. He was such an excellent teacher that he had us reading, writing, and even singing in that difficult language within the year. That was no mean feat!
I also knew his late son Hal well, as we attended elementary school together at Brennan in Columbia. It was quite a shock when he was killed and I have never forgotten his gentle smile.
So many years have passed since I last saw Mr. Phillips, and the Dreher he knew and served so well, and which I attended, is no more, at least physically. There is a new and modern replacement there now. However, all of us whose lives were shaped by Dreher and Mr. Phillips will always remember the good old days.
It was heartwarming to read Mr. Phillips' obituary and see all that he had done since my time at Dreher. Living in east Tennessee now, I pass through Marshall from time to time. I wish I had known that he was there. Alas, our time to renew acquaintances will have to wait.

Condolence: Herr Phillips was an awesome teacher. He had so much enthusiasm for his students and teaching that, 30 years later, I can still get by in German (and 30 years later, I must still call him Herr Phillips). You never dreaded having to go to his class. You wouldn't avoid him if you saw him riding around on his bike. Everything about him made you smile. He will truly be missed, but while he was here, he made a huge impact.

Condolence: Harold will always be Mr. Phillips to me and also to my sister and brother. Half a century ago he taught us Russian and German at Dreher High in Columbia, SC. He was a gentle lion in the classroom, commanding, cueing, and correcting our pronunciation with great skill and massive enthusiasm. He was an awesome teacher, but an even better person. I feel that all his students were made more human and more gracious by his influence. I know I was. The world is less for his loss. May he rest in peace, and may your sorrow be comforted. God bless Harold Phillips.

Condolence: Harold was a dear and compassionate friend who helped me so much during the course of our long friendship. I will always cherish his sense of humor and his willingness to help me without ever expecting anything in return. My younger son Rod always looked forward to the times, many years ago. when he could spend the weekend with Emerson and Harold and play basketball in "Phillips Arena." Harold was one of the first people I met when I began teaching at Dreher High School in 1971 and, and as a testament to our enduring friendship, he and Kathie were present at my retirement party thirty years later. The students he taught loved him as a teacher, friend, and role model. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
