Obituary for Patricia Lorraine "Pat" Phillips (Layman)
Patricia Lorraine Laymen Phillips, PhD. Pat became free from pain and at rest on March 8, 2018 at the age of 79, after a lingering period of declining health.
She is preceded in death by her parents Parker and Audrey Garnett Layman; grandson, Colby Murphy; sister in law, Janet Layman, and many very close friends of Mars Hill.
Pat is survived by her husband, Charles Phillips; children, Tina Murphy (Michael), Tony Phillips (Gwen); grandchildren, Teghan Murphy, Kristyn and Katlyn Phillips; granddaughter in law, Loriel Murphy; brother, William Layman and special devoted friends, Pat and Jerry Gault.
Pat was an academician and an avid reader with primary achievements in education, which include both bachelor and master’s degrees from Furman University and Doctorate degree from UNC Greensboro.
She taught at Mars Hill High School, Mars Hill College and in the Asheville City School System. She worked in various counseling programs, including Mars Hill College, Jones Elementary School in Asheville, Mayland Technical College in Spruce Pine and UNC Asheville.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Western North Carolina Down Syndrome Alliance, P.O. Box 421, Weaverville, NC 28787 where her granddaughter, Katlyn, participates regularly. Her greatest reward in her life was time spent with her grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1:00PM - 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 13, 2018 in the Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 2:00PM with Rev. Jeff Atkins officiating. Burial will follow at Mars Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
