Obituary for James Vaughn Slagle

James Vaughn “Von” Slagle, of 96 Locust Grove Road, Weaverville, the last surviving child of Lewis and Elsie Cody Slagle, passed away October 1, 2014, at the Yancey House, from complications of Alzheimer’s, at the age of 90.
Von was born on May 7, 1924 in Madison County, where he lived most of his life until moving to Buncombe County in 1989. He was a farmer; he loved to fish, enjoyed making a garden and NASCAR racing. Von was a World War II Army Veteran of the South Pacific and retired from the NCDOT. He loved and was very proud of his family. Von was a member of Laurel Bend Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Von is preceded in death by brothers, Huey, Carmel, Ophard, Lokie and Raleigh; sisters, May Effler and Afrey Norton; a daughter, Shirley Cody; and great grandson Brandy King.
Von is survived by his wife of 71 years, Faye Robinson Slagle; sons, Jack (Aldree) Slagle of Asheville, Morris (Shirley) Slagle of Weaverville; daughter, Betty (Gene) Hooper of Brevard; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, October 5, 2014, at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Reverends Jerry Shelton and Cline Hensley, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at the Shelton Cemetery on Long Branch Road with Rev. Scott Dotson officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Mars Hill VFW Post #5483. The family will receive friends from 1-3pm Sunday at the funeral home.
