Obituary for Vernon Brown Chapman Jr.

Vernon B Chapman, Jr., 82, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017. He was born in Mobile, Alabama and was the son of the late Vernon B. and Hattie Mae Rowell Chapman, Sr.
Dr. Chapman was a professor of education at Mars Hill College from 1969-1987 and Superintendent of Yancey County Schools from 1987-1998. He was known as Vernon, Dr. C., Doc, Coach, Daddy and best of all, G-daddy.
Vernon married the love of his life and was married to his “little lady” for 62 years. He always encouraged his family and shared the best advice. We have all received the “G-daddy talk” more than once. He was so much fun and we have all experienced his signature move “the trap” more than once, also.
Everyone knew him as a master storyteller. He had a story for each and every occasion and he loved telling them as much as we loved hearing them. We will have many treasured memories. Roll Tide!
He is survived by his wife, Mamie Sue Nelson Chapman; children, Amy Flynn (Rick), Michael Chapman (Judy) and Susan Adams (Nick); grandchildren, Jason Flynn (Natalie), Logan Flynn (Victoria), Laramie Adams, Cassidy Adams and Kate Metrick (Brandon) great grandchildren, Rowyn Flynn, Rykker Flynn, Kaylan Metrick and Ayla Flynn.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. A memorial service will be held at 6:00 pm following the receiving of friends.
In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mountain Heritage Athletics, PO Box 70, Burnsville, NC 28714.
