Obituary for Caroline Marie Marino (Strano)

Caroline Marie Marino, age 62, of Marshall, NC, passed away unexpectedly in the early morning hours of Friday, April 28, 2023. She was born July 17, 1960, in Brooklyn, New York to the late Pasquale and Loretta Puglisi Strano. She is also preceded in death by her son, Joseph Thomas Marino.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of over 40 years, Anthony William Marino; daughter, Kimberly Lillian Noel (Bryan); two grandchildren, Benjamin, and Caroline; and her twin sister, Lillian Chen (Dennis) and their children. She will be missed greatly by her family.

Though born in Brooklyn, NY, she moved later in life to South Florida before relocating to Western North Carolina in 2000. Even though she had not resided in Brooklyn for quite some time, her accent never left her. When others would inquire where she was born, she would dryly ask, “Why? Don’t I sound like I’m from around here?”

Caroline was the Early Childhood Education Director at Emmanuel Lutheran School for 18 years, beginning as the toddler room teacher before heading this role. Prior to ELS, she was a director and two-year-old teacher for many years, always noting that this was her favorite age group to teach. Caroline prided herself in helping grow the Early Childhood Program at Emmanuel and loved the children and families in whose care she was entrusted with. She was a leader, confidant, and mentor to many.

Caroline was many things to many people, but above all of these she was a grandmother to Benjamin and Caroline. She loved playing hide & seek and board games with them, throwing around a ball outside or watching their favorite show on the couch, and feeding them far too much sugar. She cherished being “Grandma” most of all.

There will be a funeral service for Caroline at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 51 Wilburn Place, Asheville. Pastor Arthur Gillespie will officiate. A reception will be held at the church following the service.
