Obituary for Dixie Marie Freeman

Dixie Marie Freeman of Mars Hill, North Carolina passed away peacefully on July 14, 2022 at Brookdale Walden Ridge with family by her side. She is a native of Madison County but spent time in Monroe, Virginia and Washington, D.C. She was a member of Anderson Branch Church and later attended Freedom Christian Church and Old Bull Creek Baptist Church.

Dixie lived an accomplished life. After attending Berea College, she started her career in hotel management and later was a key member of leadership at Potomac Power and Electric Company in the nation’s capitol. Throughout her career, Dixie gained the respect and friendship of her colleagues.
Dixie was the eldest of ten children and was devoted to her parents and younger siblings putting her own life on hold to benefit the needs of her family before those of her own. She always remembered birthdays and holidays for everyone including nieces, nephews and in-laws.

An animal lover, Dixie’s life was enriched by the love she gave and received from her dogs. She loved flowers and spent her spare time gardening. Among her many talents, she was a gifted artist dating back to her high school days during which she earned a scholarship to Berea College. An avid Washington Redskins’ fan and supporter, she never missed a home game while living in D.C. A political activist for the Republican Party, she volunteered many hours in support of local and national candidates.

Dixie was preceded in death by her husband, George Redding, her parents, Ansel and Vonalee Freeman; and sisters, Mildred Solesbee, Carolyn Wright, and Barbara Cogburn. She is survived by her siblings, Edna Freeman, David Freeman (Loretta), Ramona Fox (Preston), Lucretia Griffin (Darel), Brenda Drake (Tim), John Freeman (Sharon) as well as many nieces and nephews who will always remember her kindness and generosity.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Reverend Dennis Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow at the Freeman Payne Cemetery in Barnard, NC. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family wishes to thank the staff members at both Brookdale Asheville Walden Ridge and Four Seasons Hospice for their loving care.
Dixie leaves behind a legacy of selflessness and generosity that will be forever remembered.
