Obituary for Floyd Coates

Floyd Coates, 83, of Mars Hill, passed away Tuesday July 18, 2023, at home, surrounded by his loving family. A native and lifelong resident of Madison County, he was the son of the late Harley and Robbie Rice Coates.

He was the owner of Coates Country Store for many years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Rhonda Loretta Coates; sisters, Eula Ann Coates, and Ola Mae Roberts; brothers, Max Arrington, and Boyd Coates; mother-in-law, Lena Cody and father-in-law, Harley Cody, who loved Floyd like their own son.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years as of July 21, Rita Cody Coates; daughter, Sonya Coates Quinn (Brandon); son, Stewart Coates (Nikita); sisters, Ella Mae Norton, and Emma Kay Moffitt (Chris); brothers, Lloyd Coates (Wilma), Bernard Coates (Kathryn), Bulah Coates (Deborah), Arvol Coates (Joyce), JC Coates (Teresa), Eldridge Coates, and Coleman Cody; grandchildren, Chip Coates (Catherine), Carlie Rath (John), Mattie Quinn, Scarlett Quinn and Brandon Quinn, Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, July 23, 2023, in the Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Rev. D. Harry Culbertson, Jr., Rev. Ken Parker, Rev. Danny Jenkins, and Mr. Chip Coates will officiate. The burial will follow in Gabriel’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm, Saturday July 22, 2023, at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service.
