Obituary for Mae Gosnell Leake

Lilly Olga (“Mae”) Leake, age 87, of Burton Cove, Marshall, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, at Hospice Solace Center in Asheville following a massive stroke at home. She was a native of Madison Co. and daughter of the late John Gosnell and Mamie Cook Gosnell. Her father John died when she was only 15 years old in 1948 Her mother remained a widow until her death in 1979. In addition to her parents, Olga Mae was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters; Atlas 1917, Pearl 1917, Carl Gosnell 1992, Ethel Gosnell Talton 2012, Everett Gosnell 1989, Doris Marie Gosnell Talton 2017, Alma Lee Gosnell Gregg 2002, Richard Gosnell 2014, James Clinton Gosnell 1960, Blanche Gosnell Naulty 1980,and Martin Clifford Gosnell 2008. She suffered the loss of her beloved husband Billy W. Leake from cancer in 2000.

Olga Mae is survived by her son, William Leake Jr. (Lisa) and daughters; Betty Sue Leake Stallard (Jerry), Deborah Lynn Leake and Connie Elaine Leake, grandchildren; Kendra Diane Leake, Mamie Joy Allen, James Anderson Stallard, Stephen Martin Lawrence and Joshua Brent Leake, and great grandchildren; Eric Benjamin Allen, Jacob Alexander Allen and Riley Nathanial Allen. She leaves as well many beloved nieces and nephews. Her memory will be cherished.

Olga Mae met her husband Billy at a basketball game and was married soon after. Billy proudly served in the U.S. Army and Mae stayed with her brother Carl and his wife Betty. Following the birth of their first child, William Jr. he was honorably discharged and found employment with Ford Motor Co. Three daughters arrived over the next ten years. She enjoyed her lovely home in North Ridgeville and kept busy doing volunteer work for the school. When Billy retired, they moved “back home” to the Sodom/Laurel area. She loved taking walks, visiting with family and friends and watching wildlife (squirrels, deer). She was in declining health the last two years of her life but was able to remain at home under the watchful care of her daughter Debbie.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00PM Friday, January 22, 2021 at Tillman Gosnell Cemetery, Lonesome Mountain Road, Marshall. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to CarePartners Foundation Hospice Solace Center, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
