Obituary for Ruth Rose Hudson (Chandler)
Ruth “Granny” Rose Hudson passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday, April 2, 2020 after a brief illness. Ruth was the daughter of the late Everett Glen Chandler and the late Lola B. Cutshaw of Marshall, NC. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, our father, John Henry Hudson; brothers, Everett “Tom” Chandler, Lewis Denver Cutshaw, and Lonnie Chandler; sister, Frances Chandler; sister-in-law, Jeanne Cutshaw; step daughter, Mary Brown; granddaughter Lola Ramsey; sons-in-law, Lonnie Payne, Lawrence Griffee; many cousins, aunts, uncles, and her grandparents, HC “Collis” and Zipporah C. Rice.
Johnnie and Ruth met in PA, married in 1950, and travelled extensively before settling down to start a family. They we owner/operators of various restaurants throughout the USA. Of note, is a restaurant they owned on the corner of Hollywood and Vine where they catered to several movie stars. They had adventures traveling on Route 66, stories Mom would tell with fondness in her voice after our Dad died. When asked once why she never remarried, she stated, “your Daddy told me to take good care of the babies and I tried to do the best I could”. After Dad died, she returned to The Rice Cove, the home of her mother and grandmother, where she raised us to love God and always tell the truth. She was a good Christian woman and member of Easter Gap Church, where she was a faithful member until her health declined. She and Paul resided in the Rice Cove where he cared for her until she needed more acute care. She liked to garden, quilt, crochet, read the Bible and sing old fashioned gospel songs. She cared for her grandmother, mother, and aunt until their deaths.
She is survived by her children, Joyce P. Griffee of Elizabethton, TN., Paul Hudson of the home, Rose Rice and her husband Clayton, who treated Mom as if she were his own mother of Weaverville, NC; step son, James Hudson and wife Kitty of Sharon, PA.; and sister-in-law, Mary Chandler of Marshall, NC. Grandchildren include, John Payne (Teresa) of Elizabethton, TN., Robert Payne of Farmington Hills, MI., Chris Payne (Jamie) of Marshall, NC., Anthony Ramsey (Sandy) of Weaverville, NC., Jeff Ramsey (Christi) of Asheville, NC.; step-grandchildren, Krystal Paulson (Shannon) of Scott, LA., Logan Payne (Bethany) of Elizabethton, TN., Lauren Payne of Arden, NC.; great grandchildren, Sarah Payne, Ethen, Ramsey, Isaac Payne, Jacob Ramsey, Silas and Carver Ramsey; step-great grandchildren, Abby and Kie Paulson.
A graveside service will be held 5:00PM Saturday, April 11, 2020 at the Rice Cove Cemetery with Rev. Harlon Chandler officiating. Singing will be provided by Malcom and Brian Buckner.
