Born on January 12, 1947, in Madison County, North Carolina, Arthur was the son of the late
Fred Payne and Mary Worley Payne.
A graduate of A-B Tech in Asheville, Arthur dedicated many years of his career to Square D
Company, where he was a supervisor. He was known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and
steady presence among his coworkers.
Arthur was a faithful member of Big Lick Baptist Church in Oakboro, where he found great joy
in lifting his voice as a member of the church choir. His faith was an important part of his life
and guided him in the way he loved and cared for others.
He found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. Whether taking long walks, watching Fox News,
admiring tractors, or traveling across the United States, Arthur embraced every opportunity to
enjoy the world around him. Above all else, however, his greatest joy came from spending time
with his family. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose quiet strength,
warm smile, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Arthur was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sylvia Ann Payne, on February 11, 2020.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son, Patrick Ryan Payne of Oakboro; brothers, Neal Payne
of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Charles Payne of Mills River, North Carolina; sisters, Marsha
Keys of Asheville and Lynda Coates of Taylor, South Carolina; his cherished grandchildren,
Patrick Ian Payne and Olivia Anne Payne, both of Oakboro; and a special friend, Frances Sloan
of Locust.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the love, prayers, and kindness
shown during this difficult time. Though Arthur’s earthly journey has come to an end, the
example of his faith, his devotion to family, and the memories he created will remain a lasting
source of comfort and inspiration to all who were blessed to know and love him.
