IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Betty Jane
Buckner
October 3, 1944 – March 3, 2025
Betty Gores Buckner, 80, of Weaverville, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, March 3, 2025. She was the daughter of the late John and Clara Buckner Gores and a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Hollifield.
Betty graduated from North Buncombe High School. She worked many years at Hadley's and later retired from Mills Manufacturing after over 30 years of employment, where she worked as a sewing machine operator making parachutes for the military. Many times, 13 WLOS televised stories on the making of these parachutes, citing Betty as one of the fastest and most skilled sewers at Mills Manufacturing and she took great pride in that. She was a longtime, faithful member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She loved her church family, and they loved her just as much.
Betty enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels, as well as the deer and always made sure they had plenty of bird seed to feast on. She also loved to people watch and never met a stranger. She will be intensely missed by her family and friends.
Betty is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 56 years, Rick Buckner; sister, Pat Gores; son, Alan Buckner (Tricia); daughter, Missy Buckner; grandchildren, Adrian, Marina, and Ridge Buckner; fur baby, Stella; granddogger, Juju; grand cat, Gracie Blue; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy & Trisha Fields, whom she loved like a brother & sister; lifelong best friend, Helen "Poopsie" Hall; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm Sunday, March 9, 2025, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Reverend Keith Watkins will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-3pm at the church.
