Carrie Luther of Mars Hill, NC, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend quietly went to be with the Lord on July 28, 2012. She was born on September 6, 1913 in Mars Hill, NC and graduated from Madison County High School.
She attended Mars Hill College and later enrolled at Blanton's Business College in Asheville where she met James Vernon Luther. Vernon and Carrie English were married in Greenville, NC on July 28, 1937. Vernon, her husband for 69 years, passed away on May 20, 2007.
Carrie and Vernon resided in Andrews, NC, Newport News, VA, Hickory, NC and Braceville, OH before settling in Southington, OH in 1953. They built and managed a mobile home park in Southington. In 1974, they sold the mobile home park and returned to Mars Hill where they acquired a number of rental homes in Asheville and the surrounding areas. They have lived in Carrie's beloved mountains since that time.
For those who knew her, Carrie will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit to family, friends and neighbors throughout her 98 years. She was known for feeding large numbers of visitors on the spur of the moment and the Luther home was always a center for family activities. She was active in both the California Creek Baptist Church and the Bright Hope Laurel Methodist Church in Mars Hill for many years.
Carrie was the 10th of 16 children born to William Henry English and Mary Jane Metcalf English. She is survived by her daughter Cheryl Luther of Asheville and son James Luther and daughter-in-law Rebecca Luther of Richmond, VA. Grandchildren include Cheryl's children Lorraine Ballinger of Youngstown, Ohio and Daniel Pernice of Champion, OH, and Jim and Becky's daughter, Kristin Morgan of Atlanta, GA. Great Grand Children include Lori's daughters Kaitlyn and Jesika and Dan & Erin's son Carter Pernice. A granddaughter, Jessica Pernice, born on their anniversary, preceded them to heaven. A great-great grandson, Aidyn Pernice was born March 12, 2012 to Kaitlyn. Carrie is also survived by her youngest sister, Gertrude Jones of Emporia, VA.
The family has requested that donations be made to the CarePartners Foundation at P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813 (www.carepartnersfoundation.org) in lieu of flowers.
Visitation will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Service on Monday, July 30 from 6-8 PM. Services will be held in Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service on July 31, 2012 at 10:00 AM. A burial service will follow at the English-Metcalf Cemetery on Smith Creek Road. A reception will be held at California Creek Baptist Church reception hall following the cemetery service.
