David "Hal" Buckner, Sr., 88, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at Blue Ridge Health & Rehabilitation Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina. A native of Madison County, he is the son of the late William Garrett and Iris Ammons Buckner of Mars Hill. In addition to his parents, Hal was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Jean Stroud Buckner; brother, William Garrett "Bill" Buckner; half-brother, Levi Burgin Buckner; and sister, Nell Buckner Hill.

Mr. Buckner is survived by his son, David Buckner.

A graduate of Mars Hill High School and Mars Hill College, Mr. Buckner also earned Bachelor and Master's degrees in education from Western Carolina University. After serving in the Army for two years, he taught math, health, and PE at Camp Lab High School in Cullowhee. After retirement, Mr. Buckner returned to Mars Hill where he farmed, gardened, and enjoyed hanging out and telling stories with friends.

A service will be held 11:00am Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Mars Hill Baptist Church. Family will receive friends form 10:30-11:00 prior to the service.
