Herschel Jenkins, 92, of Big Laurel Road passed away Friday, May 22, 2015. He was a son of the late J. D. and Elsie Coates Jenkins. He is also preceded in death by his late wife Dahlia Mace Jenkins and sister Elloween Shelton. Herschel was born and raised in Madison County and spent most of his life logging and operating a saw mill. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed preserving the foods that he grew. He also enjoyed traveling and singing gospel music for several years while enjoying the mountain lifestyle. He was a wonderful father of four children; Valerie Edwards (Bruce), Eric Jenkins (Jeanette), Montie Jenkins (Joyce) and Derral Jenkins (Theresa), and also proud grandfather and great grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, May 25, 2015, Laurelton Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Officiating will be Reverends Jake Fender and Eddie Roberts. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 pm, Sunday, May 24, at Blue Ridge Funeral Service. At other times the family will be at Mr. Jenkins home on 9760 Big Laurel Road, Marshall, NC.
