IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Hoye
Coates
April 9, 1935 – November 4, 2025
Hoye Coates went home to be with the Lord on November 4, 2025. He was a proud native of Madison County and was born on April 9, 1935, to the late Theodore and Bonnie Coates.
Hoye was married to his wonderful wife Christean, who stood by his side for over 72 years. They were married on September 17, 1953. Although they did not have any children themselves, they served as parents and grandparents to so many in the community.
Hoye was a wonderful neighbor and a joy to be around. He was a kindhearted man and offered help to anyone who needed it. He always had a smile on his face and enjoyed pulling a prank on those closest to him.
Hoye left a legacy in the community, he was a friend to all and held many leadership roles at Arrington Branch Baptist Church. He was one of the oldest members and led as a deacon, served as clerk, treasurer, singing leader, and was on the building committee. Hoye lifted up the Lord singing with the Friendly Five Quartet for many years traveling across North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Hoye was a member of the French Broad Masonic Lodge #292, where he served for over 50 years and was proud to be a member.
Hoye worked for years at Three Mountaineer where he oversaw the plant operations. He was a joy to work with. He also was a Colonial Bread salesman, whose route included Marion and Old Fort.
Hoye and Christean, along with his brother and sister-in-law, Capp and Jolene Coates, were the patriarch and matriarch of Coates Brothers Produce at the Western North Carolina Farmers Market. The family left a legacy of hard work and dedication to the community they served. Many times, folks in need would come by the market without any money but would not go home empty handed. The Coates' were the very first vendors at the farmer's market. That legacy continues strong to this day at the produce stand.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Verlon Coates, and a sister, Lucille Metcalf.
Hoye is survived by his faithful companion and loving wife, Christean Bradley Coates, his brother Luther "Capp" Coates and wife Jolene, sister Jeanette Coates, and a host of nephews and nieces.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 12-2:00 PM at Arrington Branch Baptist Church, 475 Arrington Branch Road, Marshall, NC 28753, with the funeral service following the visitation at the church. Preachers will be Pastor Davy Shelton, Pastor Nic Coates, and Pastor Ken Parker. Hoye will be laid to rest at the church cemetery.
Hoye will be missed by all those that had the privilege of knowing him. He always lit up the room when he walked in with his smile and his uplifting personality.
