Jesse Carmel "JC" Moss, 88, of Spruce Pine, passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. He was a son of the late Walter and Bertha Jarvis Moss and a native of Madison County, having lived the last several years in Mitchell County.
Growing up in Mars Hill after high school, JC attended Mars Hill College on an athletic scholarship where he played football for four years. He received his bachelor's degree in physical education in 1965 and received a master's degree from Western Carolina University in 1980. Known as "Coach Moss" he taught Physical education and biology at Mars Hill High School from 1965 to 1975; physical education at AC Reynolds High School in Asheville from 1975 to 1986 and at Enka Middle School from 1986 to 1996 when he then retired to Oak Island, North Carolina. During retirement, JC spent his time volunteering in his church and community and serving on the Oak Island Parks and Recreation advisory board from 2001 to 2019.
JC was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Tabor Moss, and his brother Bob Moss.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3pm Monday, July 13, 2026, at Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service, Mars Hill, NC. Reverend Jeff Brewer will officiate. Burial will follow in the George Jarvis Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank the staff of Mitchell House for the great care they have shown to JC during his stay there. They would also like to thank the Medi Hospice medical providers who cared for JC during his final days.
