Juanita Metcalf Cisek was born in Madison County, North Carolina, to Pansy Bell (Ramsey) and George Gaither Metcalf. For the past fifty-three years, her home was in Union City, California. She recently moved to be with family and passed away June 28, 2025, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, just after her 93rd birthday. Her love of God, education, and travel were constant threads throughout her life, which she imparted to her daughters and granddaughter. She attended Mars Hill High School, North Carolina, where she received an award for perfect attendance and was voted "Best All Around" student. After high school, she moved to Washington, D.C., to work briefly and then attended East Tennessee State College for one wonderful year before returning to D.C. and meeting Leon Cisek. The plan was to return to college after the year in D.C., but Juanita's and Leon's love for each other had other plans, and they were married in 1955. Leon was in the U.S. Coast Guard, and Juanita enjoyed all their posts and travels – New York, Miami, Newfoundland, Oakland, Seattle, the Philippines, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Most notably in her work history, Juanita was a paraprofessional in Special Education at James Logan High School in Union City, California for thirty-eight years. She loved her job, the students, and her colleagues. With her daughters attending Moreau High School, she was a steadfast volunteer at the school. She served many years in the Booster Club, for which she received the John Raimondi Volunteer Award, and she was on the Board of Directors. Juanita is survived by her daughter, Karen Cisek, and son-in-law, Van Doze, of Grand Forks, North Dakota and granddaughter, Valerie Doze, of Princeton, New Jersey. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn Cisek, husband, Leon Cisek, her parents, three sisters and three brothers, and an infant granddaughter and grandson. She brought joy, excitement, and love to everything and everyone, and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
The funeral service was held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fremont, California on Thursday, July 10, with visitation at 10:30AM and Mass at 11:00AM.
Final interment will be at the English-Metcalf Cemetery in Mars Hill, North Carolina at 11:00 am Monday, July 21, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Moreau High School (please note in memory of Juanita Cisek) or a charity of your choice.
