Obituary

Karen Keeling Harvie was born November 6, 1953, to John and Jane Keeling. Karen loved her parents, but was especially fond of her grandparents, nicknamed Honey and Poppy.

She attended The University of Florida and met her future husband, Bruce Harvie, when he delivered a pizza to her dorm room. Karen and Bruce eloped during college, yet they continued their studies and graduated with honors. They settled in Florida, and a few years later, they had their first son, Duncan.

Six years later, having moved West to Arizona for Bruce's job, their second son Matthew was born. They moved a few more times, to California and Texas, but landed back in their college town of Gainesville, Florida. About fifteen years later, Karen and Bruce moved to North Carolina. Unfortunately, less than six years of living in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Bruce passed away from serious effects of diabetes. Karen was truly devastated, having lost the love of her life.

Karen *LOVED* The Florida Gators, supporting them in nearly every college sport they played. Once, she was seated near the opposing team's sideline, and was so energetic and vocal, she was asked to leave the game!!! Florida Gator memorabilia decorated her home, and Karen rooted for her Alma Mater every chance she got.

Karen was admitted to the hospital in mid-February. About ten days later, on February 28, 2025, Karen passed away at the hospital. It was extremely sudden and unexpected, as just days before, she was talking about physical therapy and getting strong enough to come home.

Karen is survived by her two beloved sons, Duncan (Ashley) and Matt (Darlene); Duncan's wife, Fatimah, previously passed away; Karen's granddaughter, Yasmin; sister-in-law, Betty (recently deceased, Dr. Keith Harvie); her brothers-in-law, Glen (Marilyn) Harvie and Wayne (Cynthia) Harvie; four nieces; and two nephews.

There are no planned services. Interment will be in Sanford, Florida. The staff at Blue Ridge Funeral and Cremation Service, 7626 Highway 213, Mars Hill NC 28754, are caring for the family.
