IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lewis Woodson
Ammons
November 16, 1943 – August 13, 2025
Lewis Woodson Ammons, Jr., affectionately known as "Woody," was born on November 16, 1943, in Mars Hill, North Carolina. He passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Woody was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Joyce Boone Ammons; his brothers, Jud Ammons, Roy Ammons, and Lawrence Ammons; and his sisters, Geneva Maney and Rachel Roberts.
He is survived by his three daughters: Juree Regazzi, Karlyn Barilovits (Paul), and Rachel Hoffman (Lee). Woody will be forever cherished and remembered by his grandchildren: Cade Regazzi, Kobe Regazzi, Hannah Barilovits, Jenna Barilovits, Lucas Barilovits, Sarah Woerner (Allen), and Tyler Hoffman (Emma); and his great-grandchildren: Oaklee, Woodson, and Archer Woerner. Woody also considered Kevin Barnette (Recy), Elisha, Nehemiah, and Anna as family. He took an active role in the lives of all his loved ones, generously sharing valuable life skills—and, of course, teaching them how to play ball.
Woody dedicated his life to education and mentorship. From the age of 21 until his retirement, he served as a teacher, assistant principal, and coach. His career began at Cane River High School and continued at Mars Hill Elementary and Madison High School, where he touched countless lives with his guidance and care. In addition to his work in education, Woody was a devoted farmer and cattleman, deeply connected to the land and community he loved.
Woody was known for his unconditional caring spirit and the deep impact he had on many young people. He helped raise not only family members, but also students and football players, offering guidance, support, and love. Affectionately called "Coach" and "Papaw," Woody was admired by all who knew him for his sincerity, positive energy, competitive nature, and sense of humor.
His legacy is one of love, service, and intentional living. He reminded those around him that while we cannot control everything, we can always choose our attitude—and choose to live a life filled with meaningful acts of kindness. Woody remained active with his beloved Mars Hill High School Class of 1961, regularly gathering with classmates for breakfast at the Wagon Wheel.
