Obituary

Luther "Capp" Coates, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, farmer, businessman, and man of faith, went home to be with the Lord on July 2, 2026. A proud native of Madison County, Capp was born on April 23, 1939, to the late Theodore and Bonnie Coates.

On June 30, 1961, he married the love of his life, Jolene Coates. Together, they recently celebrated 65 years of marriage, a testament to their enduring love and commitment. They made their home on the family farm in Madison County, where they lovingly raised their three sons: Michael (Kim), Myron (Laura), and McCray (Susan).

In 1977, Capp and Jolene, along with his brother Hoye and sister-in-law Christine, founded Coates Produce. For more than 42 years, they faithfully served the communities of Western North Carolina through their family business. Today, Coates Produce remains a thriving family-owned business and a lasting reflection of Capp's hard work, vision, and dedication.

Capp's love for the Lord was evident in the way he lived his life. His kindness, generosity, and humble spirit touched countless people and created a legacy that will live on through his family, friends, and all who knew him. He never met a stranger and was always ready to strike up a conversation with anyone he encountered. Above all, he cherished his family, his friends, and his church family.

A lifelong member of Arrington Branch Baptist Church, Capp faithfully served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He loved his church and the Madison County community where he was born and raised.

In addition to his parents, Capp was preceded in death by his brothers, Hoye Coates and Verlon Coates; and his sister, Lucille Metcalf.

Left to cherish his memory are his faithful companion and loving wife, Jolene Coates; Sister Jeanette: his sons, Michael (Kim), Myron (Laura), and McCray (Susan); his grandchildren, Nic (Lisa), Colby (Halie), Haley Jo, Addie Ray, and Callie Ann; five great-grandchildren; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 5 from 4-6 PM at Blue Ridge Funeral & Cremation Service, with the Funeral Service at 10:00am Monday July 6, 2026, at Blue Ridge Funeral & Cremation Service. Officiating the service will be Reverends, Nic Coates, Davy Shelton and Ken Parker.

Capp will be laid to rest at the Clark Cemetery following the funeral service.
