Margaret Shope Payne, 96, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at her home. She was born on June 18, 1930, and was raised by the late Lindsey and Gainer Dillingham in the Shope Creek Community of Buncombe County.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Tillery Kirk Payne, and daughter-in-law, Pam Burnette.

Left to honor her memory are her sons, Larry Burnette, Jerry Burnette, Ricky Burnette (Judy), and Monty Payne (Sherri); grandchildren, Shonn Burnette (LuAnn), Jeremy Burnette (Sarah), Brandon Payne and Amber Payne; step-grandchildren, Nathan Henderson and Kristin Patton (Austin); great grandchildren, Vinson, Ben, Bailey, Megan, Harper, and Haven; and great-great grandchild, Lucas.

Margaret was a devoted Christian who enjoyed spending time in the Bible. She was looking forward to seeing Jesus and touching His nail-scarred hands. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church, and a former Sunday School teacher.

Margaret had a passion for oil painting, her flowers, and her beloved cats.

A graveside service will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Kirk Payne Cemetery. Reverends Stanley Peek and Jordan Byrd will officiate.
