Obituary

Onzie Oscar Taylor, Jr., 83, passed from this life to eternal life with his Lord and his beloved wife, Judy Harding Taylor, on September 7, 2025, at his home in Weaverville, NC. A native of Buncombe County was born on December 27, 1941, to the late Onzie Oscar Taylor, Sr. and Martha Calloway Taylor.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Darlene Cheek; brothers, Harold Taylor and Ted Taylor; granddaughter, Hannah Marie Taylor; three great-grandchildren lost to miscarriage-two from the Langford family and one from the Mathews family-who now rest safely in the arms of Jesus; sisters-in-law, Laura Taylor, Irma Taylor, Joyce Taylor, and Brenda Taylor; and brother-in-law, Joe Cheek.

Onzie leaves behind a legacy of servanthood-a man who gave of his time and talents with no expectation of return. He carried a genuine and pure love for people, and his appreciation for others was evident in every interaction. He was a doer; it didn't matter what the task was-if something needed to be done, whether for himself or for someone else, he showed up and did it.

He was a faithful member of Calvary Worship Center Church of God, where he served in countless ways. He helped build the physical church that now stands as a house of worship. He drove the church van for many years, ensuring that families and children had a way to attend services. And perhaps most famously, he was known as "the tea man" faithfully preparing the tea for nearly every church dinner for many years. His quiet acts of service spoke volumes about his heart.

Onzie was also known to quietly "sneak" up to the church during the week to mow the grass, weed-eat, or trim the trees-never for recognition, but simply because it needed to be done. His quiet acts of service spoke volumes about his heart.

He is survived by his children: William Randall "Randy" Taylor and wife Vanessa; David Wayne Taylor and wife Tammy; and daughter Sandra Elaine Taylor Blackwell and husband Robert. He was the proud grandfather of David Alan Ford, Amanda Elizabeth Mathews, Savannah Taylor Blackwell Langford, and Sara Nicole Taylor. His great-grandchildren include Calab Michael, Payton Elizabeth, Autumn Arizona Ball, and Hansen Ross Langford. He is also survived by his brothers, Carvel Taylor and Weldon Taylor; sister-in-law, Joyce Harding Fowler and husband Johnny; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Calvary Worship Center, and at other times at the family home, 8 Hannah Marie Drive, Weaverville, NC.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at Calvary Worship Center, Marshall, NC. Interment will follow at Ashelawn Garden of Memory, Aiken Road, Asheville.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the amazing teams at Messino Cancer Center and Mission Cancer Center, who so lovingly cared for Dad throughout this past year. He was genuinely grateful for and loved each of you. Thanks for the "parades".
