Rev. Glen Arlen McClung, 88, of Asheville, passed away on Saturday, September 12, 2026. He was the son of the late Ludwig Watson and Eula Livley McClung. Rev. McClung is a native of West Virginia; however, he transferred to Asheville, NC and was a graduate of the class of 1955 at Ben Lippen Christian Boarding school. While in high school in Asheville, he recollects being put in charge of the vehicles on campus and spending most Sundays ministering at the jail. He loved playing the guitar and singing in the choir and in a quartet. He also discovered his call to preach right here in Asheville.

He went on to graduate from Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV and from Columbia Theo­logical Seminary in Decatur, GA. While in College he served as Student Supply of several churches in Greenbriar Presbytery; served as Youth Director and Student Assistant in Mebane Presbyterian Church, Mebane, NC, where he also met his future wife, Melinda Webster, before entering Seminary. Glen accepted a call to Kentyre Presbyterian Church upon graduation from Seminary in 1964. He and Melinda were married in 1965 while serving at Kentyre. He continued there until April, 1968 when he accepted a call to Wildwood and Cape Carteret Presbyterian Churches in Wilmington Presbytery; served as pastor there until January, 1972 when he accepted a call to McClure Memorial Presbyterian Church, Castle Hayne, NC where he served until December 28, 1978 when he moved to Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church in Asheville NC until May 1990; during this time, led the Malvern Hills Church into the PCA (1982) with no losses in membership; accepted a call to Friendship PCA in Laurens, SC in May, 1990 where he served until May, 1997 when ill health required his taking Medical Retirement. Rev. McClung has preached in numerous evangelistic meetings and revival services and trained and directed counsellors for three Billy Graham films as well as for an area-wide crusade in the Wilmington, NC area. He has served on various Presbytery Committees; was chairman of the MNA Committee in Western Carolina Presbytery and chairman of the Shepherding Committee in Calvary Presbytery. Glen, Melinda and his two children, Karma and John also sang as a family at various churches throughout his ministry.

In his spare time, when Glen was not caring for one of his many churches, he enjoyed fishing, playing guitar, and woodworking.

Rev. McClung is preceded in death his wife Melinda Webster McClung, who passed away in 2005.

He is survived by his daughter, Karma Howard (Jason Lowery) and their children, Teresa Howard, Iesha Shipley (Jeremiah), and Gregory Howard; his son, John McClung (Carrie) and their children, Darien Brown (Joshua), Derick McClung (Molly), their bonus son Bryson Shelton (Shanna) and great grandchildren: Liam McClung, Theodora Brown, Elina Shipley, Melinda McClung, Brilynn Shelton, Emmitt Shipley, Noah Shelton, and Ashlyn Ballew.

A funeral service will be held at 12pm Friday, September 18, 2026, at Malvern Hills Presbyterian Church. Reverend Joshua Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in Pisgah View Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
