Rev. Steven C. Penland, 65, of Mars Hill, passed away December 2, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on October 23, 1959 to the late Carmel and Louise Gaddy Penland.

Steven loved fast cars, motorcycles, and tractor pulling. Being a welder, gave him the knowledge to build his own tractor. He pastored South Bend Free Will Baptist Church for 10 yrs and for the last 21 years, he was pastoring Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church. Steve loved the Lord and was always pointing you to Jesus.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Levi Penland and Laylah Penland.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years, Peggy Metcalf Penland; sons, Jason Penland (Bessie), Quentin Penland (Megan); sisters, Rhonda Estel (Roger), Missy Sumner (Aaron); and grandchildren, Madison, Jackson, Jeff, and Blake Penland.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, December 8, 2024 in Green Mountain Freewill Baptist Church. Reverends Ricky Bennett, Jason Penland, and Jeff Penland will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm prior to the services at the church.
