Brotherton
March 30, 1980 – April 19, 2023
Sara Katheryn Brotherton, 43, passed away on April 19, 2023. Sara was the daughter of Kay Robinson Brotherton and the late Bob Brotherton. Born in Huntsville, Alabama on March 30, 1980, Sara received her early education through Huntsville city schools, graduating from Huntsville High and then attended her beloved Auburn University. She received her undergraduate and master's degrees, in Early Childhood Special Education. Later she received a Specialist degree in this same field from Lincoln University.
Leaving Auburn, Sara accepted a job as a Special Needs teacher in the Gwinnett County School System in the Atlanta area and taught there for 17 years. During that time she enjoyed her passion for helping dogs find safe and happy homes, working with several different agencies and was never without several dogs of her own.
Sara was a devoted teacher, touching the lives of many children as she helped to mold their lives to be productive and happy in their own journey.
Sara is survived by her mother, Kay Brotherton; her siblings, Robin Kidd (Brad) of Birmingham, AL, Lynn Summar (Ken) of Brentwood, TN, Bill Brotherton (Stacy) of Trophy Club, TX, Susan P. Thornton of Huntsville, AL, Steven Brotherton (Lily) of San Francisco, CA; nieces, Kaylor Kidd, Annie S. Murphy, Katie Brotherton, Shelby Pearsall and Grace Brotherton; nephews, Bradford Kidd, Jackson Kidd, Andy Summar, Will Brotherton, Clayton Pearsall, Sam Pearsall and James Brotherton. She leaves behind many close friends from her community in Mars Hill, NC, and her church family at Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church, Saturday, April 29, 2023, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bright Hope Laurel United Methodist Church, 271 Laurel Valley Road, Mars Hill, NC 28754; Upper Laurel Community Organization specifying for Ebbs Chapel Community Center, 1601 Smith Creek Road, Mars Hill, NC 28754, or the charity of your choice.
