In a peaceful way, above all we could ask or think, Travis Robinson, 93, of Mars Hill, was promoted from earth to the presence of his Father on November 10. God, who had given him the faith as a child to trust Jesus alone for his salvation, gave him the ability to trust Him in his severe dementia. His joy and patience and love of God and His Word, even his unintelligible prayers, were an example to us all.
"Daddo" was born in Mars Hill, served as a B24 gunner in World War II, and retired from Southern Bell as a supervisor. He was an active member of Locust Grove Baptist Church and a Gideon. He wrote an autobiography, Above All That I Could Ask or Think, which is available from the family.
Going on before him were his parents, Willard C. and Lela Sloan Robinson, brother, Dub Robinson, sister, Jean Embler and infant son, Timothy Travis.
He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 68 years, daughters Carol Jensen and, husband Gary, and Becky Eller. He has 5 grandchildren, Sheri Rose and husband Mitch, Daniel Jensen and wife Anne, Kari Brown and husband Jason, David Hill and wife Pamela, and Natalie Hill. He has 11 great grandchildren, Sheri's children; Jacob, Marisa, Jessie and Sarah Rose; Daniel's children: Brooke, Andrew and Hannah Jensen; Kari's children: Madison and Jackson Brown; Natalie's children: Ethan and Travis Call. Also surviving are sister Peggy Oxner, brother Van Robinson, 9 nieces and 5 nephews (and spouses).
We give a special thanks to his wonderful caregivers, Velma Chandler, Peggy Reems, and Mark Lisenbee, who ministered sacrificial love to us all as well as amazing physical help. We so appreciate that Jay Buchanan chose to spend so many of his retirement hours visiting and loving and encouraging day after day. Bruce and Iva DeBruhl poured out gifts and were so joyful for years in providing transportation every time the church doors were open. Locust Grove members' gifts and visits and many cards and wheelchair ramp construction and warm expressions of support and affection have been wonderful blessings. We realize that these dear believers enabled us to enjoy Daddy at home until his last day.
We will remember Daddy as a man's man who loved to work and loved his country. Music and beauty of our mountains were passions. He can be described as an encourager and helper and leader of men. He was absolutely devoted to Mother, but his love for God and for serving Him were his most memorable characteristics.
After a private burial, a worship service and celebration will be held on Tuesday, November 12 at 2:00 pm at Locust Grove Baptist Church. Pastors Rev. Steve Harris and Rev. Ben Whitmire will officiate the services. Military Rites will be conducted by Mars Hill VFW Post #5483. The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Locust Grove Baptist Church, 305 Locust Grove Road, Weaverville, NC 28787.
At other times , the family will be at the home.
