Condolence: Sarah and I were in Asheville this past Friday for an overnight stay with our daughter and family when I read in the Citizen Times dated February second, that William Ernest Powell Jr. had died. Sadness along with memories of happy times rolled in.

My mother was Mary Powell, who introduced her brother Ernest to her Western Carolina classmate Laura Lynn Harris.

Ernie, his late brother Charles and my father were all physicians who inspired me to follow their example. But I was not blessed with their brilliance or dedication, and avoided the arduous and self-sacrificing life of a family practitioner.

The memory of " Doctor Powell" to Mars Hill, "Ernest Junior" to the Powell family, "Junior" to very proud parents, and "Ernie" to those closest, will be lasting.
Sincerely, Mitchell Hurst Allen, Jr. , Mitch to many, and Mickey to family.

Condolence: "Dr. Ernie" was a giant whose contributions to our community will be remembered for a long, long time. His wisdom and humor will be missed by those of us who were privileged to know him, if only in the latter years of his awesome life.

To his family: you will miss him, but his aura of peace and love will surround you. God bless you and give you assurance of his everlasting support as you say goodbye.

Condolence: Thank you Dr. Powell for all the migraine headaches you helped me through. Your kindness and understanding were always a part of the healing. When I had a son that was so accident prone that you put stitches in him six times before he was seven years old you never thought I abused him. Then when he had asmtha you were always there for us (day or night).
Doctors like you are gone forever and that is a great loss for all of us.
May your family find peace and comfort during this time of loss. Ruby Ponder Payne

Condolence: Dear Powell Family,

Without the help of your beloved father I wouldn't even be here today. You see I was born 2 months early weighing a mere 3 1/2 lbs. Back then they didn't have incubators and all that fancy stuff for premmies they have today. Ole Doc Powell took special care of me.Stopping by my home many times on his way home from work.My first bed was a banana crate with a pillow tucked into it for a mattress, but thanks to the Doc I survived,Many times thru the years my family had need of him and he was ALWAYS there.Sometimes my Daddy didn't have the money to pay him right off but Doc Powell always told him to pay when he could knowing that he would. He treated the people in Madison with dignity and respect. If I am not mistaken he also was instrumental in creating some of the first M*A*S*H units during the war.May God give you comfort and peace during the coming weeks and months. My condolences to all.

Condolence: Dear Mrs.Powell,Carol,Alan and family. My heart is broken at the news. I shall always remember the kindness and his willingness to help me as a new nurse @ Mars Hill College Infirmary. During the years that we worked together, Dr. Powell always was kind to the students and the nurses as well as a great mentor to the nurses.
