Obituary for Johnny Elliott Wilson

Johnny Elliott  Wilson
Johnny Elliott Wilson, 51, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2018. He is the son of Junior Lee and Susan Carol Smith Wilson. Johnny was a member of Little Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by a son, Bradlee Elliott Wilson; maternal grandparents, Marjorie and Bus Smith and paternal grandparents, Grover and Juanita Wilson.
John E. Wilson affectionately referred to as Johnny with his friends who would be anyone he had ever met; because once you met Johnny he was your friend. He has been in the fire service since 1983 with Reems Creek and Weaverville Fire Departments holding every rank from Firefighter to Assistant Chief in both organizations. Johnny worked with Buncombe County Emergency Services since 1995 starting as a dispatcher and working to the 911 Director. Johnny served in many positions with Buncombe County Emergency Services; managing the North Carolina Urban Search and Rescue Team, which is located in Buncombe County and has been deployed across North Carolina during disasters. Johnny also served in any Emergency Management position necessary during emergencies affecting Buncombe County ensuring every emergency responder had everything they needed to complete their task. Johnny’s work at Reems Creek Fire Department was second to none, being instrumental to bringing Reems Creek into modern fire service, doing truck and station maintenance on a daily basis. He never knew a stranger and always exhibited his passion and love for emergency services and everyone who operates within emergency services. Johnny was best known for his positive atmosphere and joking attitude with everything he did, always making everyone laugh and have fun when they were around him. The current radio system and 911 center has been significantly influenced by the work that Johnny has done from climbing towers to driving the county to identify problem areas. Johnny’s work with the North Carolina Department of Insurance to meet rating standards has significantly benefited all of the departments in Buncombe County to reduce their insurance rating to save money on their homeowner’s insurance.
Johnny had several Certifications and Achievements: His certifications are, NC Executive Level Emergency Manager, Type III Incident Management, Incident Commander, Liaison Officer, Logistics Section Chief, Operations Section Chief, Firefighter II, and EMT. His achievements are, Vance Kee Emergency Management Award, Buncombe County EOC 911 Director, NC Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 2 Team Manager, Western NC All Hazard Incident Management Team, NC USAR Technical Advisory Group, Letter of Accommodation from Governor for work on Incident Management Team, Advancing USAR Team from Type 3 to Type 2, Improved 911 Center to maximize ISO rating for Fire Departments, NC Domestic Preparedness Region 9 Communication Representative, Member of the NC Emergency Management Association, Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Assistant Chief at Reems Creek Fire Department From 1986 to Present, Firefighter, Captain, Assistant Chief at Weaverville Fire Department From 1989-1999.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Cindy Wilson an uncle, Robert Wilson and his girlfriend, Mary Ellen Davis;
The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm, Friday, March 23, 2018 at Trinity Baptist Church, 216 Shelburne Rd., Asheville, NC. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday 24th at the church with Rev. Kermit Ball, Rev. Clark Henderson, Jeff Justice and Jerry Vehaun officiating. Burial will follow at West Memorial Park.
At other times the family will be at Mr. & Mrs. Wilson’s home at 10 McDaris Cove Rd., Weaverville, NC and Mary Ellen Davis’ home at 2 Clearview Lane, Weaverville, NC.
