Roots
A few years ago I set out to learn what I could about some of the people in my family history. Grandma was a great resource and her memory was always sharp and clear. As you know, Grandma outlived all her siblings by many years. Some of you know, but many of you do not, that Grandma had two brothers who were musicians and entertainers. They were writing and recording their own music on old 98's long before Country and Bluegrass were even identifiable. I suppose they were pre-Bluegrass and their work is identified now as Folk/Country/1930's. They were Walter and Homer Callahan. Walter is also at the Upper Laurel Cemetery. One of the tunes that they wrote and recorded is, The Little Poplar Log House On The Hill. You can hear them sing this song here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0aCP_Rwrj0 .
The photo shows Grandma(Olive) second from left, along with her mother and sisters in front of what I believe to be the original "The Little Poplar Log House On The Hill".
